Yep, you nailed it. It stems from the "Santa Clause" theory, which is a scientific theory that runs something along the lines of "there's an infinite number of parallel universes. Anything is, quite literally, possible. Because it already exists." Linking Books were just a bridge...

The irony (is that the correct word) is that Riven wasn't originally separate islands. They drifted apart over time. So how was a mining cart built with a tunnel in the water... When I think about it, I think about the chicken/egg scenario.

Did they change something in the rebooted Masterpiece edition of realMYST? Did they actually re-record the acting? Yes, they re-recorded his performance for realMyst. For your other comment, you're correct. They used a composite of green-screened video on a 3d environment. Which is the other reason...

A quick answer is no. We don't use a separate texture map for each. Mainly because of the game load time. We have to balance texture file size with the number of textures used in the game.

I can't tell you how much this is going to help the art team. We spend hours asking "hey what's going on with these three pixels over there?" "I think that's a bolt. Or maybe it's a cupcake." So yes, this is going to be very helpful to figure out some of the smaller details.
