Re: Gehn's office progress

In terms of development time, that final polish pass (getting an area from 80% to 99%) takes almost as long as getting it to that 80% in the first place. Our attention to detail makes some cool looking stuff, but also slows us down significantly. 233 is a good example of this. One of the reasons for...

Re: Answering your day/night cycle questions

Just to set the record straight, Riven had a day/night cycle when Atrus first visited there (and met Katran a.k.a. Catherine). There was at least one major scene in the novel Myst: The Book of Atrus that involved nighttime in Riven. I agree that Riven has a day and a night (although how long each o...

Re: Answering your day/night cycle questions

If you were to implement moving clouds, would that affect the light sources too much? It might, but I don't think that's a big issue unless the sky becomes too overcast, which we'd avoid. What do you mean by “Times of day under specific circumstances (Tay, 233, endings)”? Doesn’t the point about mo...

Answering your day/night cycle questions

I wrote this blog post in late 2014 as a post-Mysterium breakdown of our decision to cut the dynamic day/night cycle from the Riven remake. We never uploaded it at the time because I had planned to directly quote people who were connected to the original project, and we needed their permission. Bef...

Re: News ?

I'm not sure how much I can give away. It's been an interesting few months. A lot of the team who've been on the project for a long while (myself included) have not had as much spare time as we used to for Riven-related things. However we've expanded the team several times since Christmas - and the ...

Re: Possibility of revised Prison Island demo?

We will get back to Prison Island eventually, but I can't answer for when. Prison Island is just not that high on our list of priorities right now because it's well and truly under-control. Our current development philosophy is to focus on the difficult areas that may still include R&D. We have ...

Re: The Great Bridge of Riven

Hey! I remember Schism! Never finished it though. :( Thanks for making that video. You raise a lot of good points, and you do echo some similar suggestions that have been made during our IRC discussions. Although the issue is still mostly undecided (and probably will remain so until we reach those a...

Re: Prison Island demo indicative of final quality?

Hi udqbpn! Thanks for the critique, and thanks for playing our demo. I'll just say right up front that the Prison Island demo is not in any way an indication of final quality of RealRiven. Not only was it made many years ago, but it's in an entirely different engine! I had a quick look for your comm...
