I still think live action is always better when it comes to the kind of games Myst are. 3d animated characters have never worked for me because they're either overly expressive or under-expressive. This is okay for games like Skyrim with more everyday characters, but even then there are times where it just seems "gamey".

Riven is like a fine work of art that climaxes with that famous speech. It has to be *perfect* in that sense and you just can't convey the gravitas of a character like Gehn with animated cgi imo. Kickstarter to get Charles Dance maybe? :)

There are about 3 hours of video sequences in riven, itd require alot of resources to do this with all the detail.

When looking at 3d charackters from mass effect or final fantasy series, i think the 3d animations and expressions worked well, but yeah youre right the live action seeting fits better to the riven enviroment.

One word:
Gollum.

Or even Yoda.

That's what it will take. Do they have the know-how to do that? I don't know. They do though have ridiculous amounts of being particular.... like for individual sticks and book covers... 8-)

Look you're right, the acting in Mass Effect and so on is wooden and terrible compared to the effect that Riven needs. And I'm scared as f*** that it won't look any good too. But realistically, I think it's the only way that they would be able to manage incorporating them without reshooting the sequences. And unless they did get someone like Charles Dance, you're not going to be able to find someone to replace their performance anyway.

There's 3 hours of animation. That includes all of the levers, magcars, doors and Wahrks. Of actual people there's about 3 minutes of Atrus, 3 minutes of Cho, 2 minutes of Catherine. I guess one thing in their advantage is that there's really only about 15 minutes of footage with Gehn!

Well but also remember the village inhabitants, the scenes in moiety age(large tree in the lake). There is alot of animation in general, ie the scarabeus bugs and many of the puzzles (moving, rotating things (levers as you mentioned, submarine, maglev), ie in the school hologram projections, etc), the ending where everything collapses and the universe shows up. And so far i havent seen much of animated things in the prison island or 233 demo, besides the opening of a linking book or a rotating dome. Even if it does not include people in all of the animations, it wont be easy.

There was a ton of animation in the last demo, and honestly, animating levers and doors and so on is nothing next to animating people.

Thats the point, even doing all the other animations except the people will be enough work for the actual dev team.
I dont know how many years passed since the beginning of the project, 2 or 3? If i just imagine the complexity of ie jungle island, there surely will pass a few years until we see a great progress.

If they do a kickstarter or somehow get support by cyan, i mean most of the actors are people from the original dev team, they could setup a bluebox and record the few minutes of speeches in fullhd or 4k video, like they will do for obduction.

I think its been about 4 or 5 years since the project started. But they have had a few engine changes in there, and I think have scrapped entire areas to start again.
